Cabling types

Structured cabling solutions are defined by 'category' and this determines the rate of data transfer. BT tests - to rigorous industry standards - the most appropriate cabling category for your business. BT structured cabling components carry 20-year warranties.

  • Category 5 copper cabling provides an open infrastructure supporting all LANs up to and including 100Mbit/s Ethernet.
  • Category 5e structured cabling supports LAN systems up to 1000Mbit/s, guaranteeing Gigabit Ethernet support on copper. This is the minimum level to which all BT structured cabling schemes are installed.
  • Category 6 cabling offers higher performance cabling systems, specified to 250Mhz and supports systems up to 1 Gigabit, with higher speed potential in future.
  • Category 7 cabling is specified to 600Mhz and is 'fully shielded'. It offers more than twice the bandwidth of Category 6 but is bulkier and more expensive.

Additional options

  • Fibre optics - suitable for high-speed fibre transmission systems, including Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet Backbone technology, using second generation fibres including OM1, OM2, OM3 and OS1.
  • Bespoke cabling - if you have a requirement for a larger installation, BT offers a bespoke installation service. We can install any cabling scheme to your supplied specifications, including IBM Type 1 and Cat 7 schemes, subject to survey.
  • Branded scheme - BT offers a range of branded cabling schemes including SYSTIMAX structured cabling.
  • BT blown fibre - uses compressed air to push the fibre through plastic tubes to its destination on your site. This promotes fibre longevity as it does not place stress on the fibre cores and also enables faster changes and upgrades. Blown fibre is a quicker, safer and more reliable way of installing fibre.
  • Standard fibre cabling - the traditional method of laying fibre cable, also known as 'tight jacket fibre'. BT can provide fibre to the desk for highly bandwidth intensive applications.
